Built in the XI century by the Count Attone Leuco from Almenno San Salvatore, the castle rises as a defensive fortress which has its natural barriers with the Monte Ubione at its back and close to the confluence of Brembo and Imagna rivers.
In XIV e XV century, due to its strategic position, the Castello di Clanezzo is sought-after between the Guelph faction, from the Imagna valley, and the Ghibelline faction, from the Brembana valley. They both aim at the control of the Brembilla valley.
In 1443 the most ferocious fight takes place; the Ghibellines renounce to the area, with the peace of the Serenissima government. The Castello di Clanezzo appears considerably damaged by this fight: from the original quadrilateral construction with high towers nothing is left but ruins.
In the following centuries the different families living in there will see to the reconstruction of the castle: Locatelli, Rota, Bruscoloni, Martinengo, Beltrama and Roncalli.
Since 1960 the Castello di Clanezzo is turned into a restaurant. In 1980 the restorative activity is stopped for a few years, till 1989 when the family Rota, who leads the present management, gets the Castello di Clanezzo and renovates it inside during the following two years.
Since 12th May 1991, the management of the consorts Clara and Giovanni Rota begins; they run the restorative and hotel activity with passion and aptitude for ten years.
Monday 8th October 2001 the tragic accident of Linate put the end to their lives. With them is the young Michele, the last of their four sons.
Nowadays the management of the Castello di Clanezzo continues through the brothers Rota Paola, Matteo and Clemens.
